Clinical Anatomy
Our department’s strong history in the anatomical sciences and our long-standing collaborations with clinicians throughout London and surrounding area, have enabled exciting research opportunities wherein fundamental anatomical principles are used to solve clinically relevant problems. Several research programs apply detailed anatomical characterization to help inform surgical practice. For example, this approach has been used to address surgical challenges associated with lymph node resection in patients with testicular cancer, maxillomandibular advancement in patients with sleep apnea and reconstructive surgery following hand injury. Additionally, members of our department have developed effective collaborations with medical device companies providing a comprehensive anatomical context for medical device testing. Research in clinical anatomy capitalizes on access to cadaveric resources through our department’s body bequeathal program, coupled with cutting-edge imaging such as micro-computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, confocal microscopy and mass spectrometry, enabling clinically relevant findings that are at the forefront of their respective fields.
